SQL vs NoSQL: Making the Right Choice
Data is the heart of your application. Storing it correctly is critical.
SQL (Relational)
Example: PostgreSQL, MySQL.
Structured data in tables with rows and columns. Relationships are defined (Foreign Keys).
- Use when:
- Need ACID compliance (transactions).
- Data structure is consistent and known.
- Complex queries (Joins) are required.
NoSQL (Document/Key-Value)
Example: MongoDB, Redis.
Flexible schema. JSON-like documents.
- Use when:
- Rapidly changing data structure.
- Massive scale (horizontal scaling is often easier).
- Caching (Redis).
Conclusion
Default to SQL (PostgreSQL). It covers 95% of use cases. Only use NoSQL if you have a specific reason (unstructured data, specific scaling needs).
